Meet Dr. Kaufman

David I. Kaufman, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. David I. Kaufman is a leading Breast Cancer Surgeon on Long Island as well as an expert in non-cancerous or benign breast diseases. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery, A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons.

Dr. Kaufman received his undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He earned his Medical Degree while attending medical school at the Universidad del Noreste School of Medicine in Tampico, Mexico and completed his studies at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He then performed his advanced residency training at The New York Infirmary, Beekman Downtown Hospital in New York City. He furthered his surgical training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York. Dr. Kaufman is a native New Yorker born and raised in Brooklyn and currently lives on Long Island.

Dr. Kaufman holds an academic appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra-Northwell. He was the Director of Surgery at St. Joseph Hospital over a 10 year period, from 2000 to 2010. In addition, he is often called on to teach other surgeons and physicians about breast diseases, ultrasound guided and other minimally invasive breast biopsy techniques, breast saving surgery options  and breast reconstruction. He has also taught many doctors how to identify and manage high risk women and how to test them for the BRCA Gene for Breast and Ovarian Cancer.

Awards & Recognition

Dr. Kaufman has been listed many times in the Guide to America's Top Surgeons. He was honored as the first ever Physician of Distinction by the American Cancer Society. He has been a recipient of The Patients Choice Award multiple times. Dr. Kaufman has also been honored with the Healing Hero Award by the Nassau County Legislature. He received an award from the National Hockey League at the Nassau Coliseum where he was given the Doctors Against Cancer Award. He has been been designated as a New York Top Doctor, many times.

Dr. Kaufman has held various academic appointments and has written articles on subjects such as breast cancer, benign breast diseases, Lymphedema and breast surgery. Dr. Kaufman has been a featured guest, speaker and contributor to the American Cancer Society, The Today Show, Cablevision, Newsday, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, The God Squad, SHLI Radio, KJOY Radio and News 12 Long Island, as well as many hospitals, corporations and other community and local groups.
